Dear District 947 membership,
Recently, our sister, Jennifer Marin Esquivel, an Apprentice Organizer with District 947, went to the Winpisinger Center for Spanish Leadership Training. It was one of their most attended Spanish Leadership classes and is a sign that the IAM is moving in the right direction.
And this is what we want to talk to you about today. When we say every worker, we mean every worker. The IAM, and District 947 especially, is dedicated to making sure that we have the resources and skills necessary to organize and represent all workers. For the IAM as a whole, that in part means investing in and developing multilingual course schedules to meet all of our needs. For us at the District, it means hiring a diverse workforce and investing in their training.
Some may ask, why reach out to those other workers, why not focus on us? And our answer, inevitably, is that by organizing all workers, we are focusing on you. We all need a voice on the job, and unions raise wages and increase benefits for the entire community. When we organize other communities to stand up for themselves, your community benefits because an “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The IAM is highly invested in the labor movement and so is District 947. We are fortunate to be a part of a union that invests so much in its membership. I think our Sister Jennifer said it best when she was quoted in the I-Mail article about the Spanish Leadership Class, “To have the opportunity to learn and share experiences and knowledge is priceless. I feel privileged to be here.”
